Drowning in Blue

A glimpse into my feelings of isolation during the corona pandemic

In December of 2020, the Netherlands was in its second corona wave. This lack of social interaction has a negative influence on mental health of people all around the world, with increasing anxiety, depression and suicide rates. I could see this reflected in my close friends and family, but also in myself. As I stayed alone often, I had increasingly more feelings of loneliness and depression.

Struggling with these feelings of isolation and powerlessness towards the pandemic, I looked for art to help me express what I didn't yet have the words for. The result is an abstract visualisation of my emotions. My grief and sadness are represented by a blue veil waving around me like water, as the emotions felt all-encompassing and made me feel like drowning. The isolation is shown through far away shots of me, increasingly creating more distance between the audience and myself as the sound of washing water builds.
